Jesus Christ Superstar

Why see Jesus Christ Superstar?

Who are you? What have you sacrificed?

Fresh off a hit run in London, this Olivier Award-winning new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's groundbreaking musical astounds is heading on a North American tour. Lacing together biblical drama with a propulsive rock and funk score, director Timothy Sheader reinvents the story for the modern age, paring back the more overblown aspects of the original for a truly rocking show.

Originally starting life in 1970 as a concept album, the show was ALW's first to debut on Broadway ahead of London in 1971. Featuring the well-known hits "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him," Superstar is a tremendously powerful musical that retains a large fan base the world over.

What is Jesus Christ Superstar about?

A bombastic rock opera based on the Gospels, Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the last week of Jesus' life, heavily focusing on his relationship with Judas Iscariot. Imbued with modern sensibilities and contemporary political and social themes, this show is about a very human Jesus Christ, one who must reckon with his impending death.

Does not measure up to 70’s

I was so excited to get tickets to Jesus Christ Superstar at the Orpheum in Memphis Tn! My husband and I loved loved the movie in the 70’s with Ted Neely! I was so disappointed in the play! The only one measuring up to the task was Mary Madeline. Jesus was strong but not close to Neely! It was much too much for the girl who played Judas, nowhere coming close to the movie! I could not understand much of her singing even with my knowing the lyrics well! The music was WONDERFUL! The props were good but not particularly impressive! The dancers were amazing ! Again, perhaps I would have given a better review had I not loved the 70’s movie so! We sat in mezzanine which is our favorite place to sit. My husband had given me a sizable gift certificate to the Orpheum before Covid. We were delighted that it was honored. However, in order to redeem gift certificates required purchasing tickets in person, not on line or by phone which was very inconvenient! We had an amazing meal at Majestic! ... Read more

Get your tickets NOW - 'cuz once the word gets out, you won't find any available anywhere; yes, it's THAT good!! Powerful message with equally powerful music performed by a cast of near-perfect voices in combination with a wonderful set that puts the muscians on top of the action. They all amaze - and soothe every want with respect to matching your memories of the magnificent score with your need to experience those words performed by a cast with great unison in dance and movement while singing this dramatic story. I GUARANTEE that you will experience huge applause - and the absolute and overwhelming stillness associated with near-perfect performances. Go to a play this year - and make sure it is this one...and you will be forever a fan of both the art form and this particular presentation. ... Read more
